Supporting Faculty, Students and Staff
Academic Integrity works with faculty, instructors, students and staff to promote understanding of Syracuse University’s academic integrity policy and coordinate its administration. The office also maintains records of all academic integrity cases.
Mission and Vision
Mission
The mission of the Academic Integrity Office at Syracuse University is to promote and facilitate campus policies and best practices for integrity in all aspects of academic work and scholarship. We fulfill this mission through educational initiatives for students, staff, and faculty, and by maintaining a transparent student-centered adjudication process that upholds high academic standards while fostering an environment for students to learn, grow, and thrive.
Vision
Our vision is that the AIO will serve as a campus leader in building a community of educational excellence in which academic integrity is intrinsic to all constituents and ethical scholarship is the norm, grounded in “commitment, even in the face of adversity, to six fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage” (International Center for Academic Integrity, 2021).
Why and when was the Academic Integrity Policy created?
Syracuse University adopted a university-wide academic integrity policy in 2006. The original policy (revised in 2008, 2011, 2017, 2021, and 2025) established the Academic Integrity Office (AIO) to implement and support the University’s academic integrity policies and procedures.
How does Academic Integrity (AI) make students aware of Syracuse University’s policy?
Students must open a summary of the University’s Academic Integrity expectations in MySlice twice a year and provide their electronic signature agreeing to uphold the AI policy.
How does AI inform students, faculty and staff about new initiatives and ongoing programs?
Resources for teaching and understanding expectations can be found under the “Promoting Academic Integrity” tab on this webpage. Resources for reporting and responding to Academic Integrity charges are posted under the “Bringing a Charge” and “Responding to a Charge” tabs.
How does our office support faculty in promoting academic integrity on campus?
We create online resources for classroom use, join faculty in making Academic Integrity presentations in schools and colleges, and are available for consultation about cases and questions.
What role does Academic Integrity play in processing cases?
Most cases are reported by faculty and instructors via an online reporting system that Academic Integrity maintains in MySlice. Students and other University community members are encouraged to report possible violations by calling Academic Integrity at 315-443-5412 or emailing aio@syr.edu. We work with the Academic Integrity Coordinator of each school or college to assemble case material and notify students of Academic Integrity charges.
How do we support students charged with Academic Integrity violations?
Academic Integrity notifies students of resources and advising available to them and informs them of their appeal rights. Students may also consult with Academic Integrity staff on an individual basis.
